Fiske, John
Biography
American philosopher and historian whose writings made the evolutionary theory popular in the United States.
He was greatly impressed and influenced by the theories of Herbert Spencer and Charles Darwin and tried to instill their essence in his own works. In 1874, his Outlines of Cosmic Philosophy was published and received raving reviews. Besides philosophy he was ardently interested in American history as well and delivered lectures and wrote extensively on the subject.
Fiske's works include Darwinism and Other Essays (1879), Excursions of an Evolutionist (1884), The Idea of God as Affected by Modern Knowledge (1885), and The Critical Period of American History, 1783?1789 (1888).
