Freeman, Mary

American writer famed for her novels and stories. Freeman's work is marked by its objective narration and the author's sharp observation.
Freeman began her literary career by writing verse and stories for children. Her first adult story was published in 1883. She wrote many novels including Jane Field (1892), and Pembroke (1894) which were published under her maiden name, Mary E. Wilkins. However, she is best-known for her initial two collections of stories, titled A Humble Romance and Other Stories (1887), and A New England Nun and Other Stories (1891).
In 1925, Freeman received the William Dean Howells Medal for her exceptional works of fiction.
