Fontane, Theodor
Biography
Theodore Fontane (1819 - 1898), a German novelist and poet, was born in Neuruppin as the son of a pharmacist. He learned apothecary at the age of sixteen and wrote his first work Heinrichs IV. erste Liebe (now lost), at the age of twenty. Fontane's first published work, Geschwisterliebe (Sibling Love) appeared in the Berlin Figaro in 1839. He wrote several ballads and travel books and also served as a full - time journalist. Effi Briest (1895) and Vor dem Sturm (Before the Storm (1878) are his most famous novels. ;
